Jon B - Only One

Before Frank Ocean and The Weeknd et el re-established R&B as a movement again, our guy Jon B (among others) ran the game. While his career never really took off in the mainstream (especially in the UK), during the 90′s he was one of the champions of the genre. However, over the past decade or so as R&B’s predominance dwindled, he like many of his contemporaries were unceremoniously cast aside.
However last year an entirely new generation were (re)introduced his music thanks to Drake / Noah Shebib who superbly sampled ‘Calling On You’ on his track‘Cameras / Good Ones Go’ off his sophomore album Take Care – a move that was not only musically brilliant, but also honorable as he has clearly influenced a lot of what Drake (and The Weeknd who features on the song) do.
Now, he’s back with a new single called ‘Only One’ and has brought with him a contemporary edge which could potentially open his demographic wide open. What’s most promising about this new track is that it sounds authentic; It sounds like an artist who’s ear has genuinely evolved and acclimatised to what is now. Sonically, it’s expansive and atmospheric (carried by that familiar late 90′s Spanish guitar) and melodically it mixes the traditional with modern. Not to mention, it has a killer / sexy hook.
‘Only One’ comes of Jon’s forthcoming album Comfortable Swagg - out now
Welcome back sir.

this song reminds me of kaba modern 2007. but awesome use of that sample, methinks.
